About
About Art Practical:
Art Practical is an online magazine that enriches critical dialogue for the Bay Area visual arts by providing comprehensive analysis of events and exhibitions. Since its launch in October 2009, we have worked with a network of partners to promote the Bay Area's role in the international art scene, to create a historical record of contemporary artistic practices, and to foster artistic production through critical writing and public programming.
Our partners are important chroniclers of the San Francisco Bay Area contemporary art and visual culture: Bad At Sports, Daily Serving, Happenstand, and Talking Cure. Collectively, we represent the current shifting landscape of arts journalism by serving as junctures for critical dialogue rather than proprietors of it. In creating the coalition of four partner organizations, Art Practical does not condense information. Instead, it generates pathways of investigation.
Art Practical is emblematic of the collective and collaborative spirit of the wide-ranging Bay Area visual arts culture, which combines a long local history of incubating experimentation and innovation with international perspectives. Our contributors are some of the most renowned artists, performers, writers, educators, and curators working here. This vibrant, complex mix of cross-disciplinary practices demonstrates a model for visual arts criticism that is highly conscious of the audience it is serving, as well as the culture it is representing.

About Bad At Sports:
Bad At Sports is a weekly podcast about contemporary art. Founded in 2005, the series focuses on presenting the practices of artists, curators, critics, dealers, various other arts professionals through an online audio format.
In addition, contemporary art – and frequently books and movies – are reviewed on the program; contributions come from Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, Cologne, Switzerland and Tokyo. Bad At Sports believes that podcasting brings certain spontaneity and raw dynamic quality to the art interview and review; that feeling of casual conversation and spirited debate that is often lost in print format, is fully present in the podcast.

About Talking Cure:
Talking Cure is a printed quarterly that has addressed the concerns in the Bay Area and the art world in two thematic issues, which focus on artist and writer projects and experimental criticism. Theory has been regarded here like surgery, something used only when absolutely necessary and then by the most skilled practitioners—believing critical theory to be something that can artfully save or change a life, or, when improperly carried out or unnecessarily undertaken, cause needless pain for all involved.
Talking Cure’s content has filtered onto Art Practical as Features, and some of the writing generated online has moved into the printed form. In keeping with the historicizing function of Talking Cure, it sought out writing that moves beyond the topical service of the review, identifying work that stood on its own and expanded a reader’s understanding of art and the world.

Submitting to Art Practical
Shotgun Reviews are an open forum where the broader community is invited to contribute reviews and commentary. They are short format pieces (250-400 words) that, as the name implies, offer quick and timely responses to an exhibition, event, or even something you’ve read here. If you are interested in submitting a Shotgun Review, please contact Alyse Mason Brill.
