ReceptionJuly 8, 2016 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
6th On 7th Gallery is pleased to announce our first Members Exhibition. It will be on view from July 8 - August 26, 2017 and there will be an opening reception on July 8 from 6-8pm. A call for submissions for this exhibition stipulated that artists should in some way be connected to the 94103 zip code. Artists could go to school in the area, print their photographs at Samy’s or RayKo, go on photo shoots in the 6th street corridor, or relate to the area in any way that they felt connected them to the zip code. Some artists live across the world and others have lived in the area for 30 years. The exhibition ranges from emerging to established photographers, analog to digital, and from color and black and white images. The gallery is excited to continue to grow its community of photographs and photography enthusiasts with this exhibition and evolve our membership program. In 2014 the organization Sixth Street Photography Workshop was given the opportunity to open a gallery in the historic Hotel Isabel, a Tenants and Owners Development Corporation (TODCO) residence. Now called 6th On 7th Gallery, the exhibition space displays work compiled since 1991 from our estimated 500 former and present photographers participating in our black and white film and digital photography workshops. The gallery also features monthly guest artists, artist talks, and participates in Artspan Open Studios. Sixth Street Photography Workshop (SSPW) shares the art and skills of photography with those who suffer from mental health illnesses, PTSD, and isolation. Many have been homeless and live in transitional housing and hotels. SSPW develops talent and ability in this community to as advanced a level as possible. It offers tuition free classes and workshops in photography. Use of cameras, the darkroom, digital printers, lighting, and other equipment is provided free of charge. Participants work with Tom Ferentz, Founder and Artistic Director, S. Renee Jones and other advanced photographers, and volunteer photographers. Sixth Street Photography Workshop started in 1992 on Sixth Street in the Pontiac Hotel as a community space shared with a medical clinic, Merchants and Residents Association, Alcoholics Anonymous, and other groups. It began as a temporary project, originally intended to run six-months and to complement the building of Knox Residence, a new SRO on Sixth Street. Since then, SSPW has put down roots and grown. It operates a seven station teaching darkroom, three individual darkrooms, a film room, digital imaging and has use of a classroom. It helps SOMArts provide working facilities to artist groups.
