Organized for the ICA by the Institute of the Arts and Sciences (IAS) at UC Santa Cruz, Look Back in Time: Russell Crotty and Lick Observatory premiers a large-scale, site-specific installation by IAS artist-in-residence Russell Crotty and a rich selection of artifacts from Lick Observatory’s historical collections that provide a singular look into the processes of late 19th and early 20th century observational astronomy. Crotty’s installation is inspired by current theories about the development of the universe from just after the Big Bang to the present. Additional works in the gallery will offer a look back at Crotty’s earlier work, offering a retrospective view of his passion for astronomy. Lick Observatory’s contribution to the exhibition, selected and displayed in an installation created by Director of Collections Tony Misch, will feature historical instruments, photographic plates, and written records from the observatory’s collections. An accompanying catalog for the exhibition published by IAS will be available for purchase. Look Back in Time is jointly curated by IAS Director John Weber, Director of Collections at Lick Observatory Tony Misch and Artist Russell Crotty, in collaboration with the ICA’s Executive Director Cathy Kimball. The exhibition and associated residency are funded by grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the McEvoy Family Fund of the IAS, UC Santa Cruz Foundation and annual donors to the IAS and the ICA.
