Chandra Cerrito Contemporary is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of work by Mel Prest April 7 through May 25, 2017. In this spring exhibition entitled Lilac Aura, Mel Prest will transform the gallery with an installation of abstract paintings related to atmospheric phenomena. This new body of work was sparked by Prest’s residency in upstate New York last spring, during which the nighttime air was filled with the potent fragrance of lilacs, causing the artist’s fascination with night blooming flowers, like lilacs, star jasmine and Victorian box. Prest’s recent paintings, including some of the largest paintings she has made to date, were also inspired by the book Light and Color in the Outdoors by Marcel Minnaert. Being present in nature while cultivating awareness of what surrounds us, a new form of natural observation emerges, where the viewer perceives phenomena not immediately seen, such as fog, or night scenting flowers. In this exhibition, Prest will create an atmosphere evocative of natural phenomena and fragrant flowers, aiming to inspire meditative reflection.
