About

About Art Practical:

Art Practical is the nexus of four important chroniclers of San Francisco Bay Area contemporary art and visual culture: Bad At Sports, Happenstand, Shotgun Review, and Talking Cure quarterly. The site represents the current shifting landscape of arts journalism by serving as a juncture for critical dialogue rather than a proprietor of it. In creating the coalition of four partner organizations, Art Practical does not condense information. Instead, it generates pathways of investigation.

Art Practical is emblematic of the collective and collaborative spirit of the wide-ranging Bay Area visual arts culture, which combines a long local history of incubating experimentation and innovation with international perspectives. Our contributors are some of the most renowned artists, performers, writers, educators, and curators working here. This vibrant, complex mix of cross-disciplinary practices demonstrates a model for visual arts criticism that is highly conscious of the audience it is serving, as well as the culture it is representing.

About Talking Cure:

Talking Cure is a printed quarterly that hopes to address the concerns in the Bay Area and the art world in thematic issues, which focus on artist and writer projects and experimental criticism. Theory will be regarded here like surgery, something used only when absolutely necessary and then by the most skilled practitioners—believing critical theory to be something that can artfully save or change a life, or, when improperly carried out or unnecessarily undertaken, cause needless pain for all involved.

Talking Cure’s content will filter onto Art Practical as Features, and some of the writing generated online will move into the printed form. In keeping with the historicizing function of Talking Cure, it will seek out writing that moves beyond the topical service of the review, looking for work that it can stand on its own and expands a reader’s understanding of art and the world.

About Happenstand:

The preeminent Bay Area arts calendar, Happenstand was established in early 2008. It features a calendar with openings and lectures, list of exhibitions on view, maps locating venues, and a comprehensive archive of previous listings. Through Happenstand, Art Practical will provide readers with seamless integration between events and reviews.

About Bad At Sports:

Bad At Sports is a weekly podcast about contemporary art. Founded in 2005, the series focuses on presenting the practices of artists, curators, critics, dealers, various other arts professionals through an online audio format.

In addition, contemporary art – and frequently books and movies – are reviewed on the program; contributions come from Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, Cologne, Switzerland and Tokyo. Bad At Sports believes that podcasting brings certain spontaneity and raw dynamic quality to the art interview and review; that feeling of casual conversation and spirited debate that is often lost in print format, is fully present in the podcast.

Submitting to Art Practical

Shotgun Reviews are an open forum where the broader community is invited to contribute reviews and commentary. They are short format pieces (250-400 words) that, as the name implies, offer quick and timely responses to an exhibition, event, or even something you’ve read here. If you are interested in submitting a Shotgun Review, please contact Hope Dabov at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
