SFAI symposium program "Rehistoricizing Abstract Expressionism in the San Francisco Bay" Sept. 10 and 11.

Addressing the artists whose work was shown in the exhibition, "Rehistoricizing Abstract Expressionism in the San Francisco Bay Area: Late 1950s through 1970s," curated by Carlos Villa at Luggage Store Gallery in July 2010, this symposium will compare the experiences of the artists in the exhibition with those of artists working in today's purported "post race" world. Participants will contextualize the era in which these artists worked and how their work has helped inform the environment for artists of color and female artists today by exploring parallels or connections.

BART art brings personality and visual surprises to train riders.

From Mercury News: Ellingson is the artist commissioned to create posters for BART station walls under a fledgling program aimed at providing art to the masses and injecting color and personality into the transit system's stations. Ellingson isn't the first visual artist to find inspiration in BART. Before he made the famous "Star Wars" movies, director George Lucas filmed part of his first feature-length film "THX 1138" in the interior of BART's Transbay Tube before it went into operation.

California lawmakers approve bill to extend the time period on stolen art claims.

From New York Times: California lawmakers gave final approval to a bill that would extend the time period in which people can sue museums to try to recover what they believe are stolen works of art. Under the new legislation, which governs claims against museums, galleries and auction houses, plaintiffs are freed from any reasonable diligence provision and the clock does not start until plaintiffs have gathered enough information to evaluate whether they have valid claims.

Bill to halt deaccessioning of works of art from museums' collections has all but died in NY State Senate.

From NY Times: A bill to prohibit cultural institutions from selling pieces from their collections to cover operating costs has all but died in the New York State Legislature, in the face of opposition from major cultural institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the withdrawal of support from the bill’s Senate sponsor. Some museums are already precluded from such sales by the state Board of Regents, but the bill would have made the practice illegal and expanded the prohibition to all museums.
