James Knowlton

James Knowlton is a Portland-based curator, mixed-media artist, and writer. Within Knowlton’s visual body of work are cues of ecology, speculative biology, and queer reflection moving intoaction. Their artwork cultivates vivid tableaus and landscapes in order to create a mood or state of being based on a mode of survival. They received their BA in psychology from Naropa University and their MFA in visual studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art, where they were also selected as the 2018 MFA Curatorial Fellow. Knowlton’s photographs have been published online and in numerous publications, such as VICE and Editorial Magazine. Their work has been shown nationally in New York, Boston, and Denver as well as internationally, at the FOCUS photography festival in Mumbai. They are a recipient of the Caldera and Vermont Studio Center artist residencies as well as the Andy Warhol Foundation artist grant. They are a co-founding member of the queer curatorial group, First Brick.
