Notes from MoAD is dedicated to the Museum of the African Diaspora’s Emerging Artist Program, giving the exhibiting artists an opportunity to discuss their featured exhibition at MoAD and how their art practice is in dialogue with contemporary art as it considers themes of the African diaspora.


Notes from the Field: MoAD’s Emerging Artists and Critic Series, in partnership with Art Practical, is a podcast dedicated to MoAD’s Emerging Artist Program. This series of interviews gives the exhibiting artists an opportunity to discuss their featured exhibition at MoAD and how their art practice is in dialogue with contemporary art as it considers themes of the African Diaspora.

In this episode, Art Practical's Communications Manager, Tamara Suarez Porras sits down for an interview with Museum of the African Diaspora's curatorial team, Emily Kuhlmann and Soleil Summer. The three discuss MoAD's influence on the SF Bay Area art world and the importance of including the African diaspora in the larger narrative of the museum's curatorial structure.

tamara suarez porras is an artist, writer, and educator from (south) Brooklyn, NY and currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. tamara has taught at the International Center of Photography, City College of San Francisco (FMYASP) and the New York State Summer School of the Arts. She is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Photography+Imaging and Journalism. She graduated from California College of the Arts with a dual MFA/MA in Fine Arts and Visual and Critical Studies.
