In conjunction with 'Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark,' a sculptural installation by Gary Simmons currently on view at Southern Exposure Noted cultural writer and music critic Jeff Chang sits down with Gary Simmons for a wide-ranging conversation on art, music, race and culture. Chang is the author of 'Can’t Stop Won’t Stop' (2005), a chronicle of the early hip hop scene; 'Who We Be' (2014), on the social history, cultural influence, and massive selling of multiculturalism; and 'We Gon' Be Alright' (2016), essays on race and resegregation in America. Their conversation is followed by a live DJ set with notorious San Francisco-based DJ and producer J Boogie, who integrates various techniques and musical genres including dub, soul, hip-hop, reggae, funk, Latin, afro-beat, bhangra, dancehall, disco, electro and house.
