Give to AP
Art Practical is community-supported. All of our writing, podcasts, events, books, and programming are supported directly by your generosity. Giving to Art Practical means becoming a part of our community and sharing in our commitment to building bridges between regional arts ecosystems and uplifting the many voices that make up the arts. We are fiscally sponsored by Intersection for the Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which allows us to offer you tax deductions for your contributions. At this time we are collecting donations to archive all of our past content—the decade-long contributions of hundreds of artists and writers—and to build a fund for publishing new content in the future.

Back to topAP Edition: Lava Thomas, "Lavialle"
Lava Thomas
Lavialle (2018)
digital print (original: graphite on paper, 2003)
17 x 22 inches
Edition of 10, fair market value $400
Available for donations above $500, and comes with an artist signature and statement of authenticity. Since 2003, Lava Thomas has created drawings from hair that has been gifted to her by friends and strangers. Each drawing bears the name of its donor, serving as a portrait. Thomas’s hair drawings are executed in the style of 17th-century scientific illustration—drawn from observation in extreme detail. Cutting one’s hair offers a route to personal transformation, effecting a physical change which also signals a shift in self-image or self-perception.
