6.1 / Shotgun!

September 25 2014

Art Practical is celebrating the start of Year Six with a beloved tradition: our Shotgun! issue. The tradition began five years ago to mark the moment when Art Practical first came on the scene. Then, as now, the compiled shotgun reviews reflect the energy and enthusiasm with which we approach the breadth of Bay Area visual culture. The name shotgun review implies both quick action and a loud impact; we have always sought to cultivate significant attention for the work and practices we find remarkable and inspiring. The twenty-one shotgun reviews by new and returning contributors collected here offer thoughtful impressions of fall and late summer exhibitions in the Bay Area, launching us into another exciting year of critical and engaging dialogue. As with the beginning of each year, we once again look forward to the concepts and questions that will shape the nature of our discourse and who will participate.

This year, Art Practical will continue to bring you weekly reviews, new and ongoing columns, as well as our tri-monthly thematic issues organized by guest editors. Look out for programming, such as the upcoming Open City/Art City Festival, in which we bring conversations off the screen and into real life, and where we hope to deepen our connections with the community at large. As these shotgun reviews reflect, we remain committed to a diversity of voice and perspective that reflects the shifts and supports the artistic integrity of the place we call home. Enjoy – Kara Q.
